Database of Violent Attacks

Application for Managing the Database of Violent Attacks (DoVA)

DoVA focuses on violent and terrorist attacks, containing data since 2014 to date. Year 2014 marks a turning point due to the fragmentation of traditional terrorist organization structures, the emergence of the Islamic State, and the transformation of so-called lone wolf attackers.

The database includes attacks in Europe, Turkey, and relevant incidents in the European parts of Russia. It focuses on events significant to our context, excluding the activities of local separatist groups.

DoVA tracks a wide range of criteria, including the type of target selected, modus operandi, attack epicenter, timing relative to target activity levels, the attacker’s nationality, age, and gender, links to other attacks, and more.

Initially, the database was a growing document created for the internal use of analysts and security consultants at STPI. It now features a web interface designed to provide access to the statistical part of the database for a broader professional audience. We believe that sharing information is vital for the Czech security community, and we hope DoVA will prove useful to you.

The database project was developed under the Soft Targets Protection Institute (STPI) as an analytical and statistical tool for research and education in the field of soft target protection.

Although STPI no longer has legal status, its members maintain close collaboration and professional connections. STPI continues to serve as a brand uniting experts in this field and as the founding institution of this project.

Currently, the continuity and coordination of the project are ensured by the consultancy company RELKIN CONSULT, which brings together experts in soft target protection, physical security, and other areas on a project basis. It can be considered a successor organization, drawing inspiration from STPI’s legacy and connecting experienced practitioners with researchers to enhance soft target security, provide quality consulting services, and maintain a project-based collaboration platform.

The project’s partner is Tomas Bata University in Zlín (UTB), which finances data updates and management while also providing secure server space to ensure smooth website operation.

Given the constantly evolving trends in the tracked categories, the database is continuously updated. Likewise, we are constantly improving the user interface and refining data management in the database’s administrative section.
